Miracle on the Martwa Wisła – 15 August in Nowy Port

Another edition of the Miracle on the Martwa Wisła will take place on 15 August in Nowy Port. The attractions include workshops, lectures, concerts, film screenings and other artistic events, which will provide a perfect pretext for spending some time outdoors.

In 1845, American thinker Henry Thoreau subjected himself to a social experiment and spent over two years of his life in the forest surrounding Walden Pond in Massachusetts. During this seclusion, away from civilisation and progress, Thoreau created a manifesto of simplicity, self-sufficiency, personal development and praise of nature – Walden: or, Life in the Woods. In his criticism of the Western civilisation, obsessed with the American Dream and becoming whoever we want to be and, consequently, buying and owning more and more objects, he stated that nature was the best place for self-discovery and achieving harmony. Now, on 15 August 2015, we will be standing on the shore of Martwa Wisła and attempting to recreate Thoreau’s journey in a day. Hopefully, with the help of nature, we will discover charm, peace and contentment.

Inner tube and brake workshop / Projekt Zębatka
12:00-14:30 -changing and fixing inner tubes
15:00-17:30 – cleaning and lubricating the bike

Come on your own bike in work clothes!

Two workshops on basic bike maintenance – the first on cleaning and lubricating the bike, the second – on changing and fixing inner tubes and regulating brakes.

Changing and fixing inner tubes and regulating brakes
The theoretical part will focus on the types of valves, inner tubes, tires, brakes, mechanisms and basic faults. The practical part will include removing and installing wheels, changing inner tubes, regulating brakes and exchanging brake pads. We will be dealing with the following brake types: cantilever, b-break, symmetrical road brakes, single-pull caliper brakes (unfortunately we won’t have time for hydraulic, disc, drum or coaster brakes). If you know that you have to exchange a part of the brake system (e.g. cable, housing, pads) – take the new parts with you.

Cleaning and lubricating the bike
We will talk a bit about the theory – the construction of the bike, names of the parts and what to use to clean and lubricate them – and then move on to practice. Come on your own bike and don’t forget to bring work clothes and gloves, a brush/toothbrush and a plastic container (e.g. yogurt or ice-cream box, milk carton cut to 1/3 of the height). Tools such as spanners or screwdrivers and products such as white spirit, kerosene, petrol, chain lubricant will be available, but you’re invited to bring your own.

WIATRAKI – CUDAKI – workshops in creating toy windmills / Grupa Większe PÓŁ, 14:00 – 16:30

Windmills, propellers, turbines, kites, wind twisters… Większe PÓŁ invites everyone to join in the game with the WIND. We will have over two hours to invent and create devices, machines and toys propelled by the wind. We will provide you with elements and materials you’ll be able to use to create your own Wonderful Windmills.

Artur Kawiński, lecture: Boredom – a historical and anthropological perspective 17:00 – 18:00
A lecture on boredom as seen from the historical and anthropological perspective. The following matters will be discussed: the relationship between nature and culture; diagnoses of cultural alternatives: Marcuse, Rousseau, Thoreau, Emerson, Fromm; culture and Far Eastern spirituality; different paths to self-fulfilment.

Building naturally!/ Pracownia Mech 16:00 – 18:30
At the beginning of the workshop we will form groups and, map in hand, set out to search for the building material for our future shelter. All found elements will be placed on the building site and the design process will commence. Anyone can be a designer! We will use cardboard domino boxes to create a model and then switch to the 1 : 1 scale using straw cubes. After a set of joint, collective building, there will be time for a picnic and a conversation on self-sufficiency and ecology in architecture. Of course, the picnic will take place in the straw space we will have created.

Cooking workshop “Picnic by the fire” 19:00 – 20:00
We will jointly create healthy snacks and play with colours, tastes and aesthetics of our delicious dishes. The main role will be played by “Salad rolls”, and each participant will be able to prepare their own roll using vegetables, spreads and sauces. It will also be possible to taste healthy sweets and home-made sourdough bread.

Nowy Port Dancing
Zespół Cieśni i Tańca (bez tańca) – Gra do tańca!

(M. Bunio. S – vocals, Tomek Ziętek – trumpet and keyboards, Irek Wojtczak – saxophone and clarinet, Kamil Pater – guitar, Olo Walicki – double bass, bass and keyboards, Tomek Sowiński – percussion),
20:00 – 21.45
ZESPÓŁ CIEŚNI I TAŃCA is a musical, dance and theatre collective, combining the worlds of improvised music, contemporary dance and performance. Each live set by ZCiT is characterised by an individual approach to the structure of the performance, depending on the space of the stage and nature of the event. For the Nowy Port Dancing, the ensemble decided to prepare two sentimental sets with music to dance to. The first – elegant and classical, recalling both the era of swing and social realist songs disguised in a jazz combo sound. The second – a musical essence of Polishness, where folk themes and hits of the past will be placed in the party atmosphere of beat machines, disco polo keyboards and stylish stage presence.

Take This Waltz / outdoor screening 22:00 – 24:00
2011 | 116’ | Spain, Japan, Canada | dir. Sarah Polley
28-year-old Margot (Michelle Williams) is the happy wife of cookbook author Lou (Seth Rogen, cast in spite of his comedy past). Yet when Margot meets Daniel (Luke Kirby), the pair instantly falls in love with each other. To make matters worse, it turns out that Daniel lives on the opposite side of the street. The pair begins to spend more and more time with each other, trying to overcome the passions and the fledgling affection. Take This Waltz is a film that is warm, optimistic and colourful like a bowl of fruit, presenting the viewers with the sunny answer to the ever-present question: what is the effect of a long relationship on love, sex and our image of one another?

The event is organised as part of the Outdoor Gallery of the City of Gdańsk co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
